Maybelline Superstay Foundation: is it as Good as the Influencers say?

These days, it’s hard to know what’s true and what’s not on the internet. Well, my honest Maybelline Superstay Foundation review is something you can most certainly trust. Check it out…

Maybelline Superstay Foundation

When writing my second article for London Runway (issue 24, p. 49-51) magazine discussing make up on a budget, I set myself the challenge of finding a foundation which was long-lasting, with a lovely finish on the skin, and great value for money. So, I searched online for a make-up product which had good reviews from influencers, and the general public alike, and went from there.

Coincidentally, the day before I popped into town to traipse the drugstores, I came across an ad on my Instagram feed for Maybelline Superstay foundation, which showed YouTubers trying it out. One even went as far as to say that this was their new favourite foundation, so I thought it must be a sign!

Naturally, I purchased it to try it for myself. But, were the reviews correct? Check out my thoughts on the Maybelline Superstay foundation, here…

Maybelline Super Stay Foundation Review: My First Thoughts

Here was the finished look after applying my normal, every-day makeup (see my Norvina palette review for my general makeup), with Maybelline Super Stay as the base. Please excuse my ginormous cat-eye flicks today… they kept going wrong!

Putting Maybelline Superstay 24h Foundation to the Ultimate Test: the Results

Here, I’ve broken down the main elements of the foundation, from packaging to product quality, so you can get an idea of how I judged it. Then, I’ve provided an overall average of my scores to give you the most accurate review I could. So, here goes nothing…

Packaging: 7/10

Although the feel of this packaging is heavy, due to the glass finish, which I always love with a foundation, the lid and the nozzle feel, and look, rather cheap. However, considering the cheap price point, I would always prefer a quality product over quality packaging, so this is a minor setback.

Quality of Product: 8/10

As this is only very cheap, it is not a 10/10 perfect product – I’m sure there are more expensive brands which are all-rounders. However, on a budget, this is a great alternative to these dearer brands.

The actual finish is exactly what I look for in a foundation; sheer but also buildable, without looking cake-y. It doesn’t last entirely throughout the day, but it lasts enough to keep you going for the most-part.

Colour Range – Getting the Right Shade: 6/10

The Maybelline Superstay foundation shades UK has to offer are pretty good; there looks to be 28 shades, altogether. What I found unusual about this product was that the colour range seemed to focus more on the middle range of skin tones than the 2 extremes of light and dark. Due to this, I struggled a bit to find a good match.

The best method I find of choosing a foundation shade is to head to the shop to try them out in person. Here, you can take some Maybelline Superstay foundation swatches, either on the back of your hand, or on your neck to get a more accurate match.

I would say that my skin tone is usually amongst the first 1-4 colours of most ranges but, when I visited the shop, I still struggled to find a colour match. I ended up going for a shade which was a little darker than my normal skin tone, as the lighter shades were more red-toned, whereas my skin is more yellow-toned. After looking at the colours online, I can see that there is not a great range for lighter or darker skin, so it wasn’t just my bad luck on my shopping trip.

Foundation Dispenser

Ease of Use: 6/10

The nozzle is perfect to control the amount of foundation you use. However, for some tips on how to apply Maybelline Superstay foundation, you may want to listen up here…

The product dried rather quickly on the skin, and was then hard to blend. So, I would suggest not to dab the product all over the face before blending (as I would usually do), but focus on one section of the skin at a time. This way, you won’t end up with splodges of orange all over your skin!

Price for Product: 10/10

Definitely worth it. This product is £9.99, and will last for ages.

Overall Rating: 7.4/10

My Final Thoughts

Since trying this product, alongside the Revolution Foundation Stick, I have now finally discovered my perfect foundation, using a mixture of the two! I first dot the Revolution Stick all over my face, and then pop around a half/whole pump onto my foundation brush, dot this around the face also, and then work both foundations into the skin in a circular motion.

I initially decided to do this because the Revolution Stick was a perfect colour match for me, and I loved the Superstay formula, but it is a little too dark for me. Therefore, I thought “why not, let’s mix them!”, and it worked a treat.

The finish is so smooth, and not cake-y at all, and I loved how it turned out. This will be my go-to foundation for the foreseeable future, for sure!

Have you used the Maybelline Superstay foundation before? Would you recommend it too? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the product in the comments below, and whether you thought it was a worthwhile product for the price.

I recently tried this, and I have found that the use of different primers matters with this foundation. One day I could wear it, and it would look flawless and hold up pretty well. Another day, I’d wear it (different primer) and it would be a cakey & patchy mess if that is possible. Did you have this experience?

I don’t tend to use primers (which I probably should) but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if this was the case with you! I definitely find that, if my skin is a bit drier on certain days it definitely applies differently. These days, I mix it with the revolution foundation stick (which I’ve also done a review on) and it really works!
