As a marketer for any company, implementing SEO is one of the most important aspects of it all. This way, search engines can recognise the authority of your site, meaning you’ll appear on more relevant search results pages. But, how does social media play into this?

A Beginner’s Guide to SEO: What is SEO?

SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is the act of optimising your website and brand image for search engines. This can be done through a number of mediums and techniques, including:

  • Writing relevant blog posts and site pages in a certain way;
  • Using keywords throughout your website and blog posts to increase search traffic to your site;
  • Making sure your website loads quickly, through reducing image sizes throughout;
  • Making sure your social media tells your message;
  • Link building through other sites;
  • And engaging with your audience.

Does Google Crawl Social Media Pages

Social media sites are, indeed, crawled by search engines in the same way as any other site. This is why, when you type a person’s name or company name into Google, their social media comes up in the results pages.

That said, social media site links are of no real use to companies and websites, as social media links are all no-follow. Not only this, but social media shares happen way too quickly for any search engines to keep up. This means that being linked to on social media sites has no real impact on your Domain Authority (DA).

What’s more, engagement and followers also have no impact on your DA either. This is because search engines have no real way of telling whether these sites have a good authority or not, just through social media. So, search engines take little notice of these factors within their rankings.

So, social media has no direct effect on your site’s authority and, therefore, no effect on your web exposure on a background level. That said, this doesn’t mean that social media doesn’t have an effect on your rankings in other ways…

How to Optimise Your Social Media Strategy for SEO

If done correctly, and in symbiosis with your company or site message and brand image, social media can really impact how highly you appear on search engines. At the end of the day, the more people who interact with your site, the more people will link back to it, and the higher you will then rank in search engines.

With this in mind, it’s important to know some of the ways you can optimise your social media posts to ensure they get seen. Keyword use is key here, so let’s dive in…

Using Keywords in Your Social Posts

To get everything to link up nicely, you should use your blogpost keywords in your relevant social posts too. All you need to do is add the main keyword you used within your blogpost in your social media post in the most natural way possible. For example, for our blogpost on the “layout of your blogpost”, your social post caption could read:

This also comes through using relevant hashtags. This way, people can more easily find your social post based on the fact that it’s something of interest to them. Then, this should lead to more traffic to your site too!

Using Keywords in Your Social Media Bios

You can also make your social media sites as visible as possible through using keywords in your social media bios. Using the same tactics as you use to choose your main blogpost keywords, via Google Keywords, is the way to do this. By including as many relevant keywords in your social media bios as possible, you can gain visibility.

This can also be done on your company website too! By simply using the right keywords and phrases throughout, that link up with your social media, you’ll create a visible company image on Google.

Adding Images on Social Media

Putting an image on your social post is one of the best ways to get people to read your post. Alt-txt doesn’t stop with your blogpost, though, and can be used in the same way on social media as you use in your blog.

One thing to ensure is that, in your social media settings, you have alt-text available. Twitter is the biggest culprit for this, so you’ll have to ensure alt-txt is set up as a feature in your settings to be able to post with this.

Just remember the alt-txt rules from our keywords blog post, and use them here! An easy way to do this is by using one of the images from your blog, and simply copying and pasting the same image description as you used there into your social post descriptions.

How Social Media Impacts Your SEO

Not only can we use SEO to boost our social media pages, we can also get a lot of SEO benefits from utilising social media correctly. The obvious benefit of this is that you boost interaction, and get more traffic towards your site.

Social media gives you the power to engage with a huge array of people across the world, who may be interested in what you provide. So, with the right message and brand image, you can gain a relevant audience who may be interested in what you have to offer.

Consistent interaction from this audience can lead to even more interaction. After all, word of mouth is key in any marketing strategy, and social media is the greatest word-of-mouth platform out there! In fact, the more interaction a post gets, the more chance your site will have of being indexed quickly.

Then, this consistent interaction, which should hopefully bring more people to your site, should help search engines to recognise the usefulness of your site. The more people that visit, and the longer people stay on your site, the more chance you’ll have of ranking higher!

What’s more, the more people who interact with your social media, the more likely your site is to get linked elsewhere. After all, being linked to by other sites is one of the most effective ways to boost your DA. So, the more exposure your site has on social media, the more likely it will be for this will happen. Ultimately, social media is our biggest tool when it comes to getting more people to read our blogposts. So, after posting a blogpost on your website or blog site, it’s important to update your followers about this. Putting together a social post, which summarises your blogpost and links to it, is the best way to do this, as we’ve seen above.

We’ve also shown you the effect that social media can have on your website’s SEO. No, social media doesn’t have direct link on DA, but it has an indirect link. The more people who visit your site, the better your rankings will become, and the higher your DA will be.

    Finally a good article on SEO.. Do you always apply SEO to your blog posts? I often find it challenging to write engaging content while keeping in mind the appropriate keyword density, but when done right it is definitely worth the effort. SEO has always been the number one method to gain targeted leads that can convert in lifetime customers, when using PPC and Social Media Campaigns the results are just not the same.       Thank you so much for reading, and for the lovely comment, Debby! Ever since I started to learn more about SEO, I don’t write in any other way now. I think, if you’re trying to teach someone something new, SEO is the perfect way to write, as you can cover all bases, and make it as informative as possible. I’ve only been implementing these techniques completely for the past half a year, and I’ve definitely seen my rankings increase for different keywords. I reckon the true test will be if these rankings get higher and in greater volume this time next year. I’m impatient, so I can’t wait!
